About Jimbaran Beach

Jimbaran Beach is a wide, crescent-shaped bay on Bali's southwestern coast, located in the South Kuta District roughly 7 km from Ngurah Rai International Airport. The beach stretches along Jimbaran Bay, backed by a continuous row of open-air seafood restaurants that grill fresh catch over coconut husk charcoal every evening as the sun sets across the Indian Ocean.

Unlike the busier beaches at Kuta and Seminyak, Jimbaran remains a working fishing village. Truly an immersive addition to your Bali tour packages, so that you don’t only visit beaches and temples, and explore these offbeat places, Jimbaran works as both a base and a standalone evening destination.

Importance of Jimbaran Beach

Jimbaran is the primary fishing hub for southern Bali. The Kedonganan Fish Market, which runs along the bay's northern end, is the largest fish market in the region. Fishing has supported the Kedonganan community for generations, and the name Jimbaran itself derives from the Balinese word "jimbar," meaning wide or expansive.

For tourism, Jimbaran's beachside seafood dining is one of Bali's most recognisable experiences, attracting visitors from across the island every evening and regularly featured on Uluwatu combination tour packages.

History of Jimbaran Beach

Jimbaran was a quiet coastal fishing settlement through most of the 20th century, largely overlooked by the tourism development that began transforming Kuta and Sanur from the 1970s onwards. In the 1980s, resort developers identified the bay's calm waters and white sand as suitable for luxury hotel construction. The first international properties arrived through the 1990s, gradually establishing Jimbaran as one of Bali's premium coastal zones.

Roughly 30 years ago, fishermen began grilling their unsold catch directly on the beach for passing tourists, and slowly it became a popular culture and an attraction.

Best Time to Visit Jimbaran Beach

The best time to visit Jimbaran Beach is during the dry season (April to October). June through August offers the most reliable evening conditions for beach dining. The best time to visit is from 5:00 PM onwards, when the seafood grills light up, the tide is typically lower, and the sky shifts before dark.
