Located at an altitude of over 4,500 metres in the remote Hanle region of Ladakh, the Indian Astronomical Observatory is one of the highest observatories in the world. Operated by the Indian Institute of Astrophysics, the facility is known for its advanced telescopes, minimal light pollution, and exceptionally clear night skies. The surrounding landscape remains largely untouched, with wide open plains and almost no urban development nearby.

The best time to visit the Indian Astronomical Observatory Hanle (Hanle) is between May and September when roads remain accessible, and skies stay relatively stable for night observation. Clear moonless nights offer the best stargazing visibility, while daytime travel becomes easier before afternoon winds intensify across the plateau region.
Entry Fee: There is no entry fee to visit the Indian Astronomical Observatory (IAO) in Hanle. However, because it is a functioning scientific research facility, access depends on permission and special visits.
