Hikkim Village is famous for one thing most people do not expect. It has the world's highest post office. At 4,400 meters above sea level in Spiti Valley, Himachal Pradesh, people come here to post a letter or postcard from the top of the world. A simple experience, but one that stays with you.
Spiti Valley has a way of slowing you down. Hikkim is part of that. Writing a postcard and handing it to a postmaster who has done this for decades is not something you forget easily. Komic and Langza villages are just a few kilometres away. All three together give you a side of Spiti that most travellers drive past without stopping.
Many travellers now explore these remote villages through carefully planned Spiti Valley Packages that cover Hikkim, Komic, Langza, monasteries, high altitude landscapes, and local cultural experiences in one unforgettable journey.
Hikkim has been a small Buddhist farming village for centuries. The Spiti Valley was part of the ancient trade route connecting India and Tibet. Villagers grew barley, peas, and potatoes — crops built to survive extreme cold and a very short growing season.
The post office was established in 1983 by the Indian Postal Department. It became the highest functioning post office in the world. Postmaster Ram Singh Thakur ran it for decades and became a legend among Spiti travellers.
June to September is the best time. Roads to Spiti open up, and the weather is stable enough for travel. Visit between 9 AM and 4 PM when the post office is open. October brings early snowfall, and roads start closing. From November to May, Hikkim is cut off from the rest of Himachal Pradesh. So, you'd better escape this time.
Hikkim is 18 kilometres from Kaza in the Spiti Valley. The drive takes around 45 minutes on narrow mountain roads. Private cabs from Kaza charge ₹2,500 to ₹4,000 for a full day covering Hikkim, Komic, and Langza. No public bus runs directly to Hikkim. Kaza is 200 kilometres from Manali, and the drive takes around eight to nine hours.

Great Trip. Very Adventurous indeed. Sent that postcard from Hikkim to my grandmother who has always wanted to travel but couldn't. She called me crying. That one small thing made me emotional the whole evening. The package was great but that moment is what I'll carry forever. Thank you Viacation.

Being from Sikkim I thought I knew cold. Spiti in winter is another level completely. What I loved was how untouched everything felt. No crowds at any of the monasteries, no noise in Kibber, just snow and silence everywhere. Viacation planned this beautifully.
