About Hemis Gompa

Hemis Gompa, located about 45 km from Leh in Ladakh, is the largest and wealthiest monastery in the region. Belonging to the Drukpa lineage of Tibetan Buddhism, it was established in the 17th century by King Sengge Namgyal. Nestled in a secluded valley, Hemis is renowned for its vibrant annual Hemis Festival, held in honor of Guru Padmasambhava. The monastery houses a rich collection of ancient thangkas, statues, and sacred relics. Its peaceful surroundings, grand architecture, and spiritual importance make it a major attraction for both pilgrims and tourists seeking to explore the cultural and religious heritage of Ladakh.
