Hidden in the centre of Goa’s capital city, Panjim, are the quaint Old Latin Quarters or Fontainhas. This cosy neighbourhood has Portuguese and Indian cultures, and it gives us a sense of the former colonial period. Narrow cobbled streets, colourful pastel-coloured houses and old-fashioned wooden windows make Fontainhas feel like a portal of antiquity, protecting Goa's ongoing history and architecture.
Recognised as a UNESCO Heritage Zone, the area is a paradise for history buffs, art lovers, and photographers. Walking through Fontainhas is like stepping into a living museum where every corner tells a story. These houses, with red-tiled roofs and elaborately framed balconies, demonstrate the typical Portuguese presence which defined the Goan identity. If you’re planning to book Goa Tour Packages, this cultural gem should undoubtedly be on your list to explore the soul of Goa beyond its beaches.

The old Latin quarter of Goa, known as Fontainhas in Panjim, is a UNESCO-recognised heritage area showcasing Portuguese-style architecture, colourful houses, art galleries, and cobblestone streets reflecting Goa’s colonial charm.
The most famous street in Panaji is Fontainhas Street, located in the Latin Quarter. It’s lined with brightly painted Portuguese homes, cafes, boutiques, and art galleries, offering a glimpse into Goa’s old-world heritage and culture.
The old Portuguese town in Goa is Old Goa (Velha Goa). It was once the capital of Portuguese India, filled with grand churches, convents, and colonial buildings, many of which are now UNESCO World Heritage Sites.
Goans received Portuguese surnames mainly during the colonial era due to conversion to Christianity, baptismal practices, and administrative registrations. Converts were often given Portuguese family names, which continued through generations and remain common in Goa today.
The old name of Panjim is Pongim or Panji, derived from the earlier village settlement. When the Portuguese developed it into a planned city, they renamed it Nova Goa, which eventually became modern Panaji.
