Canggu is a coastal town on Bali's southwest coast. Situated roughly 10 kilometers north-west of Kuta, it spans a 10 km stretch of black-sand coastline that includes distinct beachside neighbourhoods like Batu Bolong, Berawa, Pererenan, and Echo Beach. Once a collection of rice-farming villages largely unknown to outsiders, it has become the island's most in-demand destination in Bali trip packages, especially for surfers, digital nomads, and travellers looking for beach life with good food and an active social scene.
Canggu is highly significant as Bali’s premier global hub for digital nomads, surf culture, and modern wellness lifestyle. Once a quiet, rural coastal village surrounded by rice paddies, it has rapidly transformed into a trendy, high-energy epicenter. It bridges traditional Balinese Hindu culture with a contemporary, creative lifestyle.
For Bali's tourism economy, Canggu is now the island's single most booked destination area. The demand for accommodation, co-working infrastructure, international food, and surf instruction has created a dense service economy that directly employs thousands of Balinese workers, while the digital nomad population sustaining year-round occupancy across villas and boutique hotels makes it one of the most financially stable tourism zones on the island outside the established resort corridors.
Until the late 20th century, Canggu was agricultural land with rice paddies, coconut groves, fishing families, and a coastline that only a small number of surfers had discovered. In 1990, the local surfing community hosted an international surfing competition on the area's beaches, which put Canggu on the map for the first time beyond Bali's immediate surf circles.
The transformation accelerated in the early 2000s, when surfers and early settlers began settling in because of its open space and affordable rents. Over time, Canggu had over 324 registered lodging businesses against none thirty years earlier.
The best time to visit Canggu is during the dry season from May to September. You'll experience ideal weather, warm, sunny days with low humidity and optimal ocean swells for surfing. May, June & September are the best overall sweet spots. You get all the perks of the dry season, clear skies, perfect beach and pool weather but avoid the massive crowds and premium prices of peak season.
