About Wahkhen Village

Wahkhen Village is a small East Khasi village known for trekking routes, bamboo bridges, and forest trails. The village feels quieter and less commercial. Most visitors come here for outdoor activities, especially the trail leading towards the bamboo skywalk and nearby waterfalls. The Village is also known for its culture and for its unique music. If you ever visit here, you can enjoy the music and culture.

Unlike crowded sightseeing stops, Wahkhen is more about slow travel and walking through natural landscapes. It is now appearing in selected Meghalaya tour packages focused on trekking and village experiences, especially for travellers looking beyond standard waterfalls and viewpoint routes.

Significance of Wahkhen Village

Locals around Wahkhen Village often connect the nearby Mawryngkhang Trek with stories of a giant king-like figure called Mawryngkhang. According to village folklore, he protected the surrounding hills and forests from danger. The large rock seen during the trek is believed to be linked to his story.

For many villagers, these trails were not only trekking routes. They were used for movement between forests, rivers, and nearby settlements. Even today, local guides share folk stories during the trek, keeping old Khasi traditions and oral history connected with the landscape.

Best Time to Visit

October to April is better for trekking in Wahkhen Village. Start walks early between 7 AM and 10 AM for clearer weather. Avoid monsoon months, as trails become slippery and stream crossings get difficult.

One of the best trips I’ve taken. The itinerary was perfect, and every destination was unique. Kaziranga safari was the highlight. Highly recommend this 6N/7D tour package.

A well-organized tour with beautiful destinations. Shillong’s landscapes were stunning, and Kaziranga safari was exciting. Minor improvements needed in coordination, but overall very satisfying.
