Atashgah, the renowned Zoroastrian (“Fire Temple”) in Surakhany near Baku, is a stunning 17th–18th century pentagonal complex built atop natural gas vents. Enclosed by fortified walls, it features a central courtyard with a pavilion altar and corner flames, fed by subterranean gas . Originally a shared sacred site for Zoroastrians, Hindus, and Sikhs, its walls bear Sanskrit, Punjabi, and Persian inscriptions invoking deities like Ganesha and Shiva. The eternal flame faded in the late 19th century due to gas extraction and was later reignited via piped supply. Converted into a museum in 1975, Atashgah stands today as a captivating testament to Azerbaijan's ancient fire-worship heritage and multicultural spiritual history.
